Apparel / Textile

Among the entire textile market of Europe, the EU member states imported almost1.5 million tones of bodywear (includes T-Shirts, hosiery, night-/home wear, swim wear, foundations) with a value of € 25.3 billion in 2007, of which 55% came from Developing Countries. Total imports of bodywear increased, while production in the EU market decreased, which indicates that demand was largely served through imports.

The role of Developing Countries increased considerably in the period 2003-2007 from an import share of 46% in 2003 to 55% in 2007. Imports from Developing Countries rose by 50% in the period 2003-2007 and intra-EU trade by 14%. China was the leading supplier of body wear among the developing countries having 17% share of total exports to EU. This was followed by Bangladesh (5%), India (4%), Sri Lanka (2%), Thailand (1%), Mauritius (1%) and Indonesia (1%).

During the whole period 2005-2007, EU countries have shown different pattern. There were:

• Booming imports in Lithuania (+101%), Slovakia (+68%), Estonia (+67%), Greece (+60%) and Poland (54%);

• Considerably growing imports (between 30 and 40%) in Portugal, Latvia, Slovenia and Cyprus;

• Strongly growing imports (between 20 and 30%) in Italy, Ireland, Spain, Finland and Romania;

• Growing imports, above the EU average (between 16 and 20%) in Denmark and Sweden;

• Slowly increasing imports (below the EU average) in France, The N

etherlands, Germany, the UK, Belgium, Luxembourg, Austria, the Czech Republic and Hungary; Implication of REACH on Apparel/Textile Industry The textile sector is particularly very important to developing countries like India which account for 50% of the world’s textile exports and 70% of its clothing exports. The main suppliers to the EU are in Asia (with India and China being one of the major suppliers) Turkey and Switzerland. For India textile is one of the main source of export revenue and manufacturing employment.
