Overview of European Engineering Market
The demand for engineering products in the EU witnessed an increase by 7.8% annually to €117 billion in 2007. The top five countries– consisting of German Spain and the UK – accounted for 70% of total demand in the EU. It is difficult to forecast how strong exactly the decline will b product group and per country. The only product group that is expected to co a high demand is electric motors, generators, and transformers. Clearly, efficient electric solution is a long-term strategic objective in many industries.

Major Product Groups
• Handling equipment and systems: Germany is the leading market, accounting for 18% of total EU demand, followed by Italy (14%), Spain (13%) and France (13%).
• Tooling, dies and moulds: The EU market is dominated by Germany, accounting for 40% of total EU demand followed by Italy (15%), France (8%) and Spain (7%).
• Hydraulics: The EU market is dominated by Germany, accounting for 27% of total EU demand followed by Italy (16%), France (13%) and the UK (11%).
o According to the European Fluid Power Committee (Cetop), actuators form the largest group within hydraulics, representing between 20-25% of the total demand, followed by valves (about 20%), pumps (about 15%) and assemblies (10-15%). Other hydraulic products made up the remaining 30%.
• Electric motors and generators • The EU market is dominated by Germany, accounting for 33% of total EU demand, followed by Italy (20%), France (10%) and Spain (8%).
• Pneumatics: The EU market is dominated by Germany, accounting for 27% of total EU production, followed by Italy (13%), the UK (10%) and Spain (8%).
o According to the Cetop, valves account for 30-35% of the total demand, followed by actuators with about 30%, filters/regulators/lubricators with 5-10%, and assemblies with 3-5%. The remaining 25-30% consists of other pneumatic components.

Total EU imports: Total EU imports annually grew by 12% in the period 2003-2007. After an annual 9.5% growth between 2003 and 2005, growth accelerated in the period 2005-2007 to 13% per year on average.

Import from Developing Countries
The highest growth was recorded by Developing Countries supplies, which increased at an average annual growth rate of 28%. This is a confirmation of increasing relocation of production and sourcing to low-cost co as a result of ongoing, strong global competition for standard engineering products. Germany remained the largest import market in the EU, followed by France. Italy (third position in 2007) and the UK changed places at third and fourth position.
China accounted for 64% of all engineering products imports coming from DCs (and 4% of total imports. China was followed by India (7.0%), Turkey (6.6%), Brazil (5.8%), Malaysia (2.0%), Thailand (1.7%), and Croatia (1.7%). The only DC that saw a larger increase of its share than China did was Sri Lanka. Beside Sri Lanka and China, only four other main DC suppliers experienced an above DC average growth: Bosnia and Herzegovina, India, Tunisia and Vietnam.
