Electrical & Electronics

Overview of Electrical and Electronics Industries in EU

Until 2007 the EU market for electronic components showed a strong upward trend. Demand had increased by an average 6.5% per year since 2004. When taking 2008 into account, demand shows a less positive image but still increased by 4.5% per year to reach a value of €56 billion. Germany is by far the leading market in the EU, accounting for 30% of total EU demand. The top four - Germany, Spain, Italy and France - accounted for 60% of European component demand in the EU.

Total EU imports showed an increase by 7.0% per year in the period 2004-2008. This was mainly due to the strong increase in Developing Countries (DCs) imports (+22% per year). This is confirmation of the increasing relocation of production and sourcing to LCCs as a result of ongoing competition in the EU electronics market. China accounted for 72% of all electronic components imports coming from DCs (18% of all imports). China was followed by Malaysia (6.6%), India (4.2%), the Philippines (3.6%), Thailand (3.3%), Tunisia (2.3%) and Mexico (1.5%). The only DCs that saw high growth in exports to the EU were China and India.

From engineering point of view, the EU market is considered to be one of the largest in the world. Apparent demand for engineering products in the EU increased annually to €117 billion in 2007. The top five countries – consisting of German, Spain and the UK – accounted for 70% of total demand in the EU.

EU imports of engineering products from DCs grew at an annual rate of 28% in period 2003-2007, which is much faster than the average annual growth of 12%imports.

China accounted for 64%of all engineering products imports coming from developing countries. China was followed by India (7%), Turkey (6.6%), Brazil (5.8%), Malaysia (2.0%), Thailand (1.7%) and Croatia (1.7%).
